PEGASUS 50: THE PERFECT LONG RANGE VOYAGE YACHT?

The last post about the Hallberg Rasssy 50 raised a lot of interest (+ 5000 hits in two days) but many comments in the forums about the HR50 show that many have a biased view about its design program. Many see it as a boat designed to be ideally suited to voyage and to circumnavigate, but, while being able to do that, the boat program is much more generic, in fact, it is a main market yacht, like Oceanis or a C50 Bavaria.

This does not mean that the HR50 is not much better built and has much better interiors than other main market yachts, and in some cases, better safety stability. What makes it main market, like a 50ft Bavaria or Jeanneau, is the generalistic design program that is pointed to cruisers that want to do about the same things with the sailboat: most time cruising in the Baltic, Caribbean and Med with some occasional ocean crossings. 

That does not mean that the yacht cannot be used on a different program with some modifications and some additional equipment, namely a circumnavigation, it means only that it was not its main design criteria and does not come standard prepared to do that.

The design program is also not suited for cruisers that are interested in sailing fast in a sportive way, trimming sails to perfection, having fun while doing that and having pleasure at the steering wheel.

On a main market yacht the aim is to provide a simple and easy-to-sail yacht, even for the ones that are not very experienced sailors and want to cruise, using sailing as an inexpensive means to do that. They want a reasonable performance under sails and a good performance while motoring.

But, even if the HR50 and the Bavaria C50 are both main market boats, in what regards design and use, they don't point to the same market, in what regards clients, because the HR50 costs 2 times more than the C50 Bavaria. Obviously, the HR has a much-better building quality, finish, and materials, but the design quality is very similar as well as the boat program.

Voyage boat, as a denomination for a type of yacht and boat program, is not yet much used in English. The term bluewater boat is much more common, but it is a much more imprecise term because it does not refer to the yacht's main use, but to the ability to sail bluewater, and in what it regards many main market boats are bluewater boats, including obviously the HR50 (and the Bavaria C50).

For the Europeans, a voyage boat is necessarily a bluewater boat, but it is more than that,  it is a yacht with a program centered on long-range voyaging, meaning a type of boat designed to spend much more time crossing oceans than a main market boat. It is also designed to sail in colder climates and away of the main cruising grounds, where available maintenance and assistance are easy to get. That makes it a boat more adapted to those conditions but less adapted to enjoy easy life while cruising in hot climates, namely on the Med and Caribbean.

Many things that make a boat comfortable to live aboard while ocean sailing are not the ones that make for a comfortable life while on anchorage or at the marina. If the yacht is cruised most of the time, doing small passages between Islands (with everybody on the cockpit) and late afternoons and nights anchored enjoying life on a hot climate, then it makes more sense an interior and cockpit design specially adapted to that use, instead of being adapted to live full time with the boat sailing, sometimes in a cold climate, and that means, inside the Yacht.

Cruising boats' interiors are designed taking into consideration these two different and many times conflicting criteria: what is perfect to live on the boat while sailing and what is perfect to live at an anchorage or marina. Generally, a cruising boat interior reflects a compromise between these two contradictory needs, with main market boats having it more to one side and voyage boats, more to the other. 

They are main market yachts, not because they are better or worse than any other type but because they are the ones that better suit the needs of the majority of cruisers and sailors, that prefer to sail in hot climates, during the sailing season, doing day sailing and stopping at night at an anchorage or marina, sometimes passing several days there.

The Pegasus 50 is a voyage boat but even in what regards these, there are two different sub-types, a main one, nowadays mostly aluminum yachts, like  Boreal, OVNI, Allures or Garcia and a smaller subgroup of performance voyage boats like JPK (C), Pogo, RM, Cigale and several other semi-custom yachts like the FC53, the JP54.

The Pegasus 50 belongs to this small sub-group of fast voyage yachts and stands out due to several particular characteristics: to have an overall balanced sail performance (not having like the others a downwind / beam reaching maximized performance), to be closer to what traditional heavier voyager cruisers offer in what regards comfort and amenities, and to offer a great degree of customization that is only possible in boats like the FC53 or the JP54, that cost two or three times more.

The overall balanced performance makes it more adapted than the others to coastal sailing conditions, including Med and Baltic sailing, even if to a better performance upwind corresponds also sailing with more heel. To counteract that inconvenience, they propose a gimballed saloon table and seats that can be turned into a berth, ideally suited to sleep while on passage. 

When it was on the building phase I made a post about the Pegaso 50, comparing its design characteristics with several other yachts. Now that the boat is on the water, and tested by several magazines, it is time to have a new look at it. If you did not read the previous post and comparisons,  you can access it here:

On the Pegasus 50 they use top-quality building materials and processes. The hull and deck use vacum infusion, vinylester resins on sandwich composites, with fiberglass and a PVC core. On the structural bulkheads and structural parts of hull, they use also vinylester-epoxy-carbon sandwiches having the structure about 50% carbon fibers.

This allows this yacht to be much lighter than an Hallberg Rassy and possibly as strong. While a HR 50 displaces 21 000kg the Pegasus 50 displaces only 12 300 kg and the Pegasus does not manage that at the cost of a smaller B/D, quite the contrary.

The Pegasus has a 39.7% B/D while the Hallberg Rassy has 35.2%. Furthermore the Pegasus with about the same draft (2.30m to 2.35) has a much more efficient tandem torpedo keel that maximizes B/D. That difference in B/D and keel effectiveness gives Pegaso a better stability curve with a higher AVS (125º to 114º) and with a proportionally bigger force righting the boat up from a knock-down to 90º.

However,  I should point out that the displacement big difference gives the HR a much bigger overall stability and it should be wrong to say that the Pegaso is more seaworthy than the HR. More correctly we can say that the Pegaso, while a much lighter boat compensates that with better dynamic stability.

Regarding that weight difference, we will have to consider that part of it is due to bigger HR50 length and beam. The HR is a bigger boat with a 15,2 m HL and14.8m LWL while the Pegasus has 15.0 HL and 14.1 LWL. The HR has 5.0m beam and Pegasus 4.8m.  Also, the type of lighter material used on the Pegasus furniture contributes to diminishing the overall boat displacement.

The Pegasus with much less wet area, a lower drag keel and hull (with a bit less hull form stability but with more stability coming from the ballast), with more sail area than the standard HR will be a much faster sailboat in all circumstances, especially in light and medium-light wind situations. In light wind it will not only be faster, but able to sail when the HR 50 will need to use the engine.

Less weight means not only a faster boat but a smaller sail area for a given wind and the same speed, with all the advantages that brings regarding sail handling.  Pegasus has a 135.1m2 upwind sail area, bigger than the standard HR sail area (131.5m2) but smaller than the "optimized" sail area (149.5m2). If the HR 50 is already a lot slower than the Pegasus, who would want the standard sail area? Only the ones that would use the yacht many times as a motor-sailor.

The HR50 has on its optimized sail version a 20.0 SA/D (17.6 standard), the Pegasus 25.8, the HR50 has a 180.1 D/L. the Pegasus 122.3. These numbers are a good indicator to the comparative sail performance between the two boats, and the fact that the Pegasus has a less beamy hull, a superior B/D and a more efficient keel increase the already big difference of sail potential towards the Pegasus.

Unfortunately, all tests to date were performed almost without wind and out of a small puff with 8kt, where the Pegasus sailed close to wind speed, no other meaningful data could be registered, except the lack of information given by the steering wheel, due to the hydraulic system.

Note that lack of information does not mean lack of effectiveness, it means that the rudder gives little information regarding the forces that it is subject to. The ones that sailed with a fully hydraulic rudder system know the feeling (or lack of it). Anyway, this is irrelevant while the boat is sailed by autopilot but in what regards hand steering it will take the fun away and will make it less precise.

There is however a video with the boat sailing at obviously two-digit speeds and I believe that substantiates the brand claim that the boat sails at 12kt with 20kt winds. I have no doubt that for a voyage boat this is a very fast yacht.

The Pegasus 50 offers a dedicated interior pilot station, ample storage, a good galley very well adapted to cooking with heeling, two good cabins and an additional space that can be used as an "office" or as a small cabin for two kids or one adult. It has two heads, one small and a bigger one with a separate shower. The interior storage is good and the access to the technical area and engine is very good.

It offers also a dinghy garage, a big wet locker that will accommodate a fully inflated dinghy. They talk about a 2.80m max length for the dinghy even if that seems a bit optimistic to me at least in what regards easy deployment and re-storage. It has three waterproof bulkheads, one of them separates the bow area and another the transom area from the rest of the boat.

This boat does not offer in-mast furling, not standard not even as an option due to possible jamming problems. As standard, it offers a boom automatic one-line reefing system with a big lazy bag. They have considered a furling boom but they gave it up due to the price of a top carbon system. It is not offered as an option but it can be mounted if a client desires it.

There are 4 electric big winches and the rigging is traditional using small genoa travelers over the cabin, with the possibility of a rail for a smaller self-tacking heavier weather sail that is standard on the Globe version that comes with a Solent rig, that contrary to a cutter rigger can dispense runners.

The mainsail control is a single-line system without a traveler mounted on an arch. I would have liked a bigger distance between the two rollers on the arch for a better downwind sailing, but this way upwind, close to the wind, the forces on the arch are smaller and the correct tension on the boom easier to get.

The genoa uses an interesting two-point spatial control system. A bit unexpected on a voyage boat, more used on cruiser racers. The system will provide great trimming for the genoa but I doubt it would be the most convenient for this type of boat or to give the better trim to a furled genoa or jib.

Three different headsails, two of them fixed and a removable code 0 (or gennaker) on the bowsprit allows for a big sailing potential and one that can be managed by a short crew, even solo (medium-skilled sailor), or by a couple. This configuration is possible due to the mast position, that following a similar evolution on racing solo yachts, is much more aft than what it was some years ago.   

The interior is functional and semi-custom. If I like the functionality I cannot say the same regarding the design choices in what regards color scheme, design details, the height of the saloon seats (without lateral or frontal view) and the layout, but many things can be improved inside what it is customizable. The used materials are light and seem of good quality.

It is possible to make a functional interior with good design quality. The parts I find particularly disagreeable are the prominence of aluminum in the galley, giving it an industrial kind of look and the prominence of white everywhere, particularly on the lower surfaces and saloon floor. Also the general design treatment of surfaces, for instance, the space between the saloon seats and the upper "windows" is poorly treated, even if not in what regards functionality.

I know that for some this would be irrelevant and for them functionality is all that matters, but for me, and others, beauty and style on a living space are important and in what regards that the Pegasus 50 is so far away from the Hallberg Rassy 50 as the Hallberg Rassy is from the Pegasus 50 in what regards sail performance.

And I am not talking about interior space, which is much bigger on the HR 50 (to the cost of a dinghy garage and lots of storage space) but about the design quality. That has nothing to do with style (that can be different) but with quality in design. 

The HR50 offers a much bigger interior, 2 big good cabins and a smaller one, two big heads both with separate shower. The Pegasus 50 has a good-sized cabin and two smaller ones with two heads, smaller than the ones on the HR and only one of them with a separated shower.

On the Pegasus it would have made more sense to have two good cabins instead of three cabins, but just a good one. Fortunately, that is possible without changes on the bulkheads and even if not proposed in any of the possible layouts, it is easy to rearrange the space gaining in the process a bow locker and allowing for a decent chart table on the inside steering post. 

The outside bow locker would be very useful for something that is forgotten but necessary to all that sail several days without going ashore: a space to store the garbage before being disposed of. 

From the different proposed layouts, the one that makes more sense is the one with a huge sail locker at the bow, one good cabin and a small cabin. 

But the second cabin has not the width to make it comfortable for two adults. It would be required at least 30cm more in beam for that to work.

This layout would make sense for a couple that wants to circumnavigate or sail extensively but will not provide a comfortable second cabin for guests or for two couples to sail extensively. Of course, if they are children and family there will not be a problem. Better than the second small cabin, the saloon can be easily transformed into a big "bed".

As they say a cabin in the middle of the boat minimizes movement while sailing and it is the best place to sleep on passage but a bow cabin offers a huge advantage while at anchor that it is completely dismissed: only in a bow cabin can you have small windows (or inserts as they are correctly named) that allow you to control on both sides the boat position while at anchor.

Only the ones that don't pass much time at anchor cannot understand this need and this boat is designed for the ones that like to voyage but those who belong to the group that likes better to be at anchor than in a marina, and even if they sail and voyage a lot, they will be passing at least as much time at anchor as sailing and that makes the absence of a way to visually control the boat position from the main cabin an important flaw.

With big crews, there is an anchor watch, at least when there was some wind (a very frequent situation) but with a couple that does not make sense and the usual way is a kind of automatic vigilance system that a sailor develops that is to control the boat position several times a night, and many when the wind is stronger, to verify if the anchor is not dragging. 

If there are "windows" on the bow cabin at the right position there is no need to get out of bed and a simple look at the reference points will tell the sailor if all is well. On this yacht, the sailor will have to get up, go out of the main cabin and go to the saloon to be able to watch if everything is alright. Very uncomfortable, potentially dangerous. I would hate to sleep on this boat at anchor and I spend a lot of time at anchor, as do many sailors, even if I sail more than most.

The saloon bed can be better in this case, even if one has to go on his knees to be able to look outside, but it would not make any sense to make this the main boat berth due to conflicting uses. 

But that will be an excellent berth for sleeping while the boat is sailing, because it can be gimballed to each side 10º (Globe version) allowing for a much more comfortable position when the boat is heeling. That system can also be very useful for having a meal, or just to sit in a more comfortable position while on the way and when for climate reasons it is more comfortable inside than outside.

As an innovation, besides the gimballed saloon this boat offers a better interface between the cockpit and the boat interior, an idea that was already explored in some sailboats, one of them the Sense, from Beneteau. In fact on the HR 50, to go from the cockpit to the saloon you have to come down 5 steps while on the Pegasus 50 there are only two.

And probably the saloon can be raised a further step increasing views and diminishing that difference to a single step. The forward view from the salon (without raising it) is only aft and allowed by the big glass surface on the aft part of the cabin that integrates a sliding hatch. In this aspect, it provides even lesser outside views than the saloons that have relatively big windows on the hull.

There are other several interesting features on this yacht, one of them, standard only on the Globe version, is a mix of sprayhood and sunshade. They call a "cabrio hard top roof" that covers a good part of the cockpit and has a removable central cover to let the sun in. Contrary to almost all permanent sunshades on yachts this one looks integrated, but contrary to the ones on other voyage boats it offers a very small lateral protection to water projections.

It has also an interior pilot station with a good view all around that allows sailing the yacht from there with a joystick. It will provide a very comfortable place to steer when it is cold or it rains outside.

 A pity for the very reduced space for deploying charts. A secondary inside pilot station is one of those things that is really useful for sailing in colder climates or out of season, even on the med, and that very few boats of this size offer.

This is a very interesting yacht for the ones that want a cruising boat where voyage and all-weather sailing comfort is much more taken into account on the final compromise, than for a main market yacht, with the supplementary advantage to be a fast sailing boat. 

But as in any compromise that comes not for free and compared with a main market yacht what is compromised is the interior space (smaller cabins, smaller saloon) and the outside living space, having this yacht a considerably smaller cockpit.

Another big advantage is the semi-custom approach, with the possibility of many alterations in what regards finish and interior, allowing you to adapt the boat to your needs and taste, making it your own, and different from all others. 

And it is interesting also due to its price, 650 000 euros for the GT version and 850 000 for the Globe version that taking into account the high-quality build materials and processes, it is a reasonable one, lower than any other similar offer with the same equipment or characteristics. 

The Globe version includes a carbon mast, solent rig with a self-tacking jib, four solar panels, hydro-generator, diesel generator, watermaker, teak decks, electric winches, dinghy with electric engine, stainless steel anchor chain and stainless steel Rocna and several other things, some of them I would dispense, like a free choice of hull color.

If I would take away the equipment that the Globe has and that I would not be personally interested in having if the boat was for me, I could cut out of the 850 000 euros about 80 000 euros and that would bring the price down to 770 000 euros, even less if I would have instead of the carbon mast an aluminum one with wire rigging (less maintenance). I could use that money for sails and electronics or to make some significant alterations to the interior.

Of course, this is a lot of money but high-quality boats are expensive and boats less suited for living aboard while sailing,  much slower, without the possibility of being sailed from the interior, with a not so good safety stability, and without customization possibility, like the Hallberg Rassy 50 or Amel 50 cost respectively, 1,1 million euros and 0.9 million, having as standard much less equipment (all prices without VAT at the shipyard).

That is why when I talked with them (at the Dusseldorf boat show) I had some doubts about the viability of the project (with those prices) but they have managed to finish the first boat, that was used as a demo boat (that is now for sale), have several other commands and are working on a bigger boat, a 54/55fter. 

Slovenia has been in the last years one of the places where best prices and better quality can be obtained, in what regards sailing boats, and that is probably the reason why they have succeeded. Several quality boats have been produced there, among them  Shipman, from where comes some of the expertise used in this yacht.

I have followed their progress, I have discussed several aspects of the boat with them and I can say that I appreciate their honest approach. I have an agreement with them and if any blog follower is interested I can provide free advice (for the sailor) in what regards customization and adaptation of the Pegasus 50 to each one's needs, depending on lifestyle, personal taste, and cruising grounds.

That does not mean that this is the best 50 ft around, not even the best performance voyage boat. Such a thing does not exist and the choice depends on what one wants from a cruising sailboat, the cruising grounds, and personal preference, but this one ticks a lot of cases and it is a sailboat that will keep on sailing when many others will have to use the engine.

It is a beautiful and fast yacht, offering many interesting solutions, easy to sail and where systems have been kept simple to avoid problems and that if compared with some other voyage boats is more suited to enjoy life on the cruising grounds.

I find the interior and layout a bit deceiving, not in the quality of materials, but in what regards design quality. It is a functional interior.... and maybe you like its design and layout a lot more than I do, and if not, due to the semi-custom approach, there is always the possibility of improving many of the things that I find not so well sorted out.

HALLBERG RASSY 50, THE MOST BEAUTIFULL HR EVER?


Until today the 57 was probably the better-looking HR, a beautiful yacht, but the HR50 seems even better proportioned, and that is amazing, being a smaller boat. Unfortunately, it is also the HR with the smaller B/D and AVS ever, more or less 113.5º.

It is true that due to its very substantial displacement (21000kg) and big hull form stability, the 50 has a big overall stability, but it is also true that if capsized at 90º by a very strong gust of wind (and/or a big wave) the 50 is only making the same RM to right itself up as the one that is generated with about 17º of heel, while on the 44, at 90º, the RM corresponds to the one at 24º of heel, a proportionally much bigger RM at 90º, that corresponds also to a bigger AVS (124º).

The 57 and 64, much bigger yachts, have also a bigger  AVS (118º - 124º)  and will be making proportionally more force to right themselves up at 90º, than the 50, even if they are much heavier boats, with a much bigger overall stability. Hard to understand why HR chose to have a worse final stability on the 50.

As I had discussed here before this tendency has an origin in the RCD minimum stability requirements for certifying a yacht in class A. Those requirements vary with displacement. A smaller, and therefore lighter yacht, will have a need of a bigger AVS and a heavier and bigger one can have a smaller one. That seems right because a lighter and smaller yacht has more chances to be capsized or rolled than a bigger one, but that assuming that the AVS and stability of a bigger yacht are enough to allow it a good safety margin in extreme circumstances.

What seems wrong to me is the minimum AVS for bigger yachts, which I find too optimistic. It is given by this formula: 130 - 0,002m but always ≥ 100°, being m the boat mass. This means that if a boat displaces 15000 kg, or more, the minimum AVS is only 100º and if we consider that a boat with an AVS with 120º takes an average of 2 minutes to right itself up from an inverted position (to encounter a wave that can do the job), a boat with 100º AVS, with the weight of the sails (furled on the mast and on the front furler) and radar dome, will take an eternity to right itself up...if he can do it at all, before being flooded and sunk.

Regarding the RCD requirements for a boat of this displacement (100º), the 113.5ºAVS seems not bad, and it is certainly much better than the one of an Amel 50, that has a similar keel, 20cm less draft and only 26.1% B/D (35,2% B/D- Hallberg Rassy 50).

I would like very much to have a look at the Amel 50 stability curve, which in what regards safety stability and AVS, can only be much worse than the one from the HR50, but that is something they don't disclose, contrary to HR shipyard.

A 114º AVS is average among mass-production boats. They manage that with less ballast, bigger drafts and more modern torpedo keels. All this put together allows for the same RM (and AVS) with a smaller B/D, and a smaller displacement. 

It is time for Hallberg Rassy to continue the design update that started more than a decade ago and extend that update to the only thing that remained unchanged, the keel design that is now the biggest limiting factor on performance.

 That and a bigger effort in what regards weight control, using epoxy resins, carbon reinforcements and slightly lighter furniture, is the way to continue that evolution towards better sailing boats, maintaining the building quality and the seaworthiness that were always present in HR sailboats.

The HR 50 is really a 50ft boat, the length refers to the hull lenght, the LOA is 53.6ft. This is important because more and more sailboats have their designation referring to the LOA. With a 5.0m beam, it is a beamy boat. The Amel 50 has 4.79, the Solaris 50 has 4.55 and the Bavaria C50 has the same beam but 0.8ft less in length.

I know, these are different sailboats with different quality levels and different prices, but what I want with this small comparison is to show the differences in hull design that are not as far as many may think, with the exception of the Solaris that is a narrower boat, with much finer entries.

The Solaris 50 has a slightly smaller B/D, if compared with the HR50 (34.5% - 35.2%) but the RM (and AVS) are much increased on the Solaris by the bigger draft and torpedo keel. The difference in standard draft is huge (2.80m to 2.35) and the type of keel (torpedo to bulbed keel) makes a huge difference, and the two things put together overcompensated the smaller B/D and the Solaris will have not only a better AVS, as better safety stability. The Solaris can also have a 2.35m draft but in that case, the ballast is much more as well as the B/D.

The Amel is the one with the smallest draft (2.15m), the smallest B/D (26.1%) and, like the HR, it has a relatively inefficient bulbed keel. The Bavaria C50 has about the same draft as the HR (2.30) a more efficient L tropedo keel and 29.1%B/D. In what concerns displacement, the HR50 and the Amel 50 are close (21000 kg to 20550) and the same happens with the Solaris and the Bavaria (14200kg to 15490kg). 

The Solaris is lighter due to a bigger draft and a more efficient keel, which allows it to have much less ballast than the HR ( less 2500kg), for the same effect, but also due to much less heavy furniture, some sandwich composite bulkheads, and carbon reinforcements on the boat structure.

The Solaris is 1200kg lighter than the Bavaria even if it has 500kg more ballast). That's possible due to better and lighter building materials, as well as the use of more efficient (and costly) building processes and lighter (but better quality) furniture as well as more draft and a more efficient keel (with a lead bulb).


Regarding sail performance, the differences are clear, and the more powerful yacht, and easily the fastest, in all circumstances, is the Solaris 50 with a 27.8 SA/D and a 136.1 D/L.

The Bavaria and the Hallberg Rassy will have very similar performances and only with stronger winds ( upwind and beam reaching), the Hallberg Rassy will be able to be faster, assuming the HR has the option with bigger sails, otherwise the Bavaria will be faster in lighter winds. The Bavaria has a 20 SA/D and 149D/L. Hallberg Rassy has standard 17.6 SA/D but with bigger sails (and probably a bigger mast) can have 20 SA/D for a 180.1 D/L.

 The Amel is the slowest boat in all circumstances and due to the small B/D ratio will not have the extra power the HR will have over Bavaria in stronger winds and probably, in such conditions, it will have worse performance than the Bavaria. The Amel has a 17.1 SA/D and a 187.8 D/L.

Regarding safety stability (stability curve over 80º) the  Solaris will be the one with better performance and a higher ratio between RM/D, having the bigger AVS and being the fastest to recover from a knock-down. 

Then come the HR and the Bavaria, that for a mass-production boat has a very good performance. However, it is worth considering that the much bigger HR displacement will give it the biggest overall stability, considerably bigger than the  Solaris or Bavaria ones, and just a bit bigger than the one of the Amel, in this case due to more hull form stability, more ballast and more draft.

The Amel 50, due to the low draft, low-efficiency keel, and low B/D, has a deceiving safety stability for a brand that is looked upon as one specialized in bluewater cruisers. But the Amel 50, due to the much bigger displacement, has a bigger overall stability, if compared with the Solaris or Bavaria, that, however, in extreme circumstances will hardly compensate the poor safety stability.

Some may misinterpret what I am saying regarding sail performance between Bavaria and the Halberg Rassy. Sure, Bavaria has a very good performance for a mass-production yacht but the Halberg-Rassy equals Bavaria's performance in nice weather and betters it in stronger conditions, having similar safety stability and overall bigger stability. 

That is not easy to manage even if I would have liked to see on the HR50 a better final stability and a sail performance that outsailed Bavaria in all circumstances.

That would have been possible if the HR keel had an efficient design and if some extra care would be taken in what regards reducing weight, using epoxy resins and carbon reinforcements on the keel structure. Maybe the next step for HR.

But there is one thing that seems very hard to improve and that's the interior that on this yacht seems just perfect and probably the best I have ever seen on a 50ft sailboat. I have not been inside this one but I have been inside all other HR, including the 57 and 64, and even if those two have bigger and more voluminous interiors, bigger is not necessarily nicer, and in what regards design, proportions, and perfection nothing beats this one.

My sincere congratulations to the design team that scored very high in all points, from functionality to illumination, volume style and coziness.

 The interior storage is very good and well thought, the engine room is big enough for the engine, generator and all systems, the electrical board seems incredibly simple for a boat with so much depending on electricity.

The same cannot be said in what regards outside storage that is not bad but it is far from good. There is a big sail and fender locker at the bow but even if the two lockers at the stern seem adequate (only on the king cabin version) their opening hatch is quite small limiting their use. There is also a central storage space under the cockpit floor, difficult to access due to the cockpit table and a locker under one of the seats, probably for the life-raft.

But the only real bad solution on this boat is the swimming platform, ridiculously dimensioned for a sailboat of this size, far away from the water and with difficult access from the cockpit. All the rest you can like it or not, but they are just preferences. Not the case with the swinging platform that lacks the careful design that we can find anywhere on this yacht and looks like an add-on, something amateurish in design if compared with all the rest.

And then there is the way the boat is sailed. A 50ft boat is on the limit of what you can sail solo or just with the help of your wife, if that is done manually without the cost of complicated electric and hydraulic systems that are less reliable, costly and demand a generator to be used frequently.

Solaris 50
They choose to make this yacht a fully electrical assisted sailboat with electric in-mast furling and electric headsail furler, no traveller for the main and only three electrical winches. Of course there are back up systems but they are designed for emergency use, not for comfortable use.It's a boat designed to be sailed pushing buttons, like bigger yachts are (dispense a huge crew). And of course, this implies the use of a generator, which is standard equipment.

So, in what regards sailing it, you love it or you hate it, but it will be a very easy boat to sail providing everything keeps working.

 Even if these systems are now much more reliable than a decade ago, they need much bigger and expensive maintenance and, as all electrical systems, they are not as reliable as manual ones, so it is up to you to know if this is what you want as a sailing boat, a kind of miniature maxi-yacht, or if you want to have fun while sailing, trimming better the sails and adjusting them manually.

All this, the magnificent interior and all the automatisms and electrical systems, come with a high price and the Hallberg Rassy 50 will cost 1.16 million euros at the factory without VAT or extras. Truly a 50ft boat designed without looking at costs and that's why I find it particularly annoying that this is the HR with the smallest AVS and the poorest final stability. 

The Solaris 50 will cost at the shipyard, without VAT, about 700000 euros, the Amel 50 about 900000 euros and the Bavaria C50 about 300000 euros. In any case, a well-equipped boat with VAT will cost  30 to 40% more, and in what it regards, the Hallberg Rassy comes with more standard equipment than the others.
